Peace Through Action has selected Graham Bodie as a Featured Peacebuilder because of his dedication to and enthusiasm in promoting the science, art, and act of listening as a critical skill for bridging differences between people, increasing empathy, and fostering peace.

Graham Bodie is a scholar, educator, and consultant. In each role, he brings attention to one fundamentally important, yet undervalued skill – listening.

Dr. Bodie is an internationally recognized expert on listening and has published over 90 monographs, book chapters, and encyclopedia entries. His most recent projects, The Sourcebook of Listening Research and The Handbook of Listening (Wiley-Blackwell), are comprehensive resources that review and critique current and potential approaches to measuring, theorizing, and practicing listening. An upcoming project, Listening, Community Engagement, and Peacebuilding explores how listening is used to build peaceful communities around the world.

Dr. Bodie’s work has been funded by the National Science Foundation and US Department of Defense and featured in the Wall Street Journal, Psychology Today, and on National Public Radio. In addition to several research awards, he was honored twice with Professor of the Year by students in the Department of Communication Studies at Louisiana State University, where he also was recognized with university-wide teaching awards.

When he consults, he prefers projects that allow him to make a difference. Currently, Dr. Bodie serves as Chief Listening Officer for the Listen First Project.

Dr. Bodie received his bachelor’s degree and master’s degree in communication from Auburn University and his Ph.D. from Purdue University. In addition to LSU, he also served as a visiting scholar in the School of Media and Communication at Korea University in Seoul, South Korea.
