Upstander Intervention Training Summary

This training equips participants with practical strategies to recognize harm and respond safely and effectively when witnessing bullying, harassment, or other forms of social injustice. Using the 5Ds framework, Direct, Distract, Delegate, Delay, and Document, participants learn flexible approaches to intervene in ways that align with their comfort level and safety.

The training includes interactive exercises, real-life scenarios, and role-play opportunities to build confidence and readiness. Participants explore common barriers to action, such as fear, social pressure, and the bystander effect, and learn how to overcome them through practice and reflection.

The knowledge and skills introduced in this training are especially useful for addressing challenges such as anger, bullying, harassment, prejudice and discrimination, toxic polarization, violence at work, and violence in neighborhoods. Peace Through Action’s webpages on these subjects are here.

How to Obtain This Training

Peace Through Action depends on volunteers to present this training in their communities. The volunteer activity leader can select their session’s audience, date, and location. We have designed the training for everyday people to lead it. You don’t need to be a subject expert! We provide our peace skills activity leaders a complete package of resources to assist them in planning and presenting their session.
